1. Escape the Real World
In our lives we are often surrounded by work, busy schedules, social media, technology, traffic, and so many other distracting and stressful elements. Going on a hike allows you to escape all of that and just take a little time to yourself and live in the moment! This little window of time provided by taking a hike gives you time to think about the things that are most important to you and to reflect on your life goals and decisions.
2. Push Yourself to the LimitsWhile hiking can provide you with an easy leisure activity it can also provide you with a sense of competition without even competing against anyone. Hiking isn't meant to be a race through the trail between you and another person, but rather an interpersonal challenge that allows you to push yourself and your capabilities. Hiking allows you to challenge yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. You will learn so much about yourself and what you are capable of when challenging yourself on a hike.
3. A Different Kind of HighGetting outside and hiking through nature gives you a different kind of high, not associated with drugs and alcohol. The "hikers high" offers a surreal experience accompanied by an adrenaline rush. Scientifically speaking hiking naturally increases your serotonin and dopamine levels, these happy hormones provide you with a euphoric feeling! Also, there is no greater reward than reaching the top of your trail and having the feeling of being on top of the world. Don't be afraid to get addicted to this high!
4. Good for your HealthHiking can be a great source of exercise and often times it wont even feel like exercise when your out on the trail. Exercise in the gym can often be repetitive and become more of a chore than a choice. Hiking takes the repetitiveness out of exercise because taking a hike allows you to explore new scenery, terrain, and altitudes every time you go. Hiking has proven to increase muscle strength, endurance, reduce blood pressure, increase stamina, relieve stress, get your heart rate up, and increase longevity.
5. Anyone Can GO!
Hiking can be your own personal getaway or it can be a form of socialization among friends and family. Pack your family up for the day and hit a trail, and don't forget your furry friends because all trails are usually dog friendly so don't let man's best friend miss out on your adventure.
